Throughout the ages a “hook up” has been called numerous things and has changed considerably. The idea is the same, it means getting together with someone in a sexual fashion for a night of pleasure. The key definition of a hook up is that you have relations with them, the rest is completely left open to the person who is involved in the hook up. There is no clear definition of a hook up. To some it can mean having sexual intercourse, for others it can be any sexual encounter, but a hook up is something that is supposed to be positive, like “scoring”, it is a conquest for those who are looking to be with someone.
A hook up can be with someone you know, or have never met before. When someone asks you “did you hook up?”, they mean did you connect with the person. When you say no, everyone understands that you did not make an impression, or have any relations with the other person. If you say, “yes, I did hook up” that can mean just about anything to both persons. So if someone says that they hooked up it would be a mistake to think that they had sexual intercourse which is usually the mistake most people make in the interpretation.
When you see that person in the bar or club, or even the grocery store that you find attractive, intriguing, or just someone you would like to meet, the goal is then to hook up with them, or get to know them in some fashion. The first step to a hook up is having the courage to approach them. It is impossible to hook up with someone if you don’t attempt to meet them, talk to them, or connect with them in some fashion. The long term goal of a hook up can vary. There are some times when a hook up is something that someone desires to be a one time thing, such as “we hooked up last night after the bar”, while other times there is a more long term goal desired, such as hooking up to hang out for a while.
A hook up is always a sexual thing. You don’t hook up to have a deep conversation, talk about politics or to debate historical significance of events. A hook up is purely sexual and gratifying. It is also a phrase that is used by younger individuals versus those over 40. You don’t hear many senior citizens talking about their latest hook ups. That is not to say that they don’t engage in hook ups, they just don’t talk about it in that manner. So, is a hook up something that is derogatory, or degrading to the person that you have an encounter with? The answer to that question is not necessarily. Just because someone is telling their friends that you “hooked up” with them, it may be a way that they are actually keeping your actions secret. Such a broad term, it can hide the true meaning of what you engaged in.
You know that whole phrases about getting the milk for free? If you hook up with someone should you expect that they are going to call you? The answer is maybe. A hook up is not always something that is considered fleeting, or where someone is taking advantage of another. There are sometimes when hook ups can lead to relationships and other when they are nothing but a one night stand that is going to go no where. Whether they call you or not really has nothing to do with the hook up itself, it is more about whether you like each other or not, what the expectations for the hook up was, and if it is something that was the beginning, or just a means to an end for a relationship. Every generation has their own term for “the hook up”. It is really just a way of saying that you spent time with someone in some sort of sexual way. It doesn’t signal that you went too far, or that you did something you shouldn’t have, it is just a way to say that two people made a sexual connection of some sort. If someone asks you whether you “hooked up” with another individual, if you made a connection then you simply answer “yes” no details need follow.
