Worst Movies for a First Date

Worst-Movies-for-a-First-DateThe standard movie night is a staple in the dating world no matter if it’s a first date or the 15th. It’s a good go-to date when you’re not sure where else to go or time is a constraint. It can be a great date or a rotten one depending upon the movie you see. It doesn’t matter if its movie night at home or in the theater, there are some movies that just aren’t right for a date.

Apocalypse Now

This could be considered one of the greatest movies of all time. It meant a lot to society as a whole but also politics and human relations. It’s an icon not only of its time but of all time. The issues raised in this film and the light it shed on war time and all involved are still relevant today. It isn’t a movie that incites a lot of cuddly feelings or makes one want to get any closer unless it’s to shield your eyes from the gun fire. It doesn’t put you in the mood for intimacy either. It leaves viewers with a sadness that lingers long after you’ve watched it.

Schindler’s List

This heart wrenching tale of the holocaust and Nazi Germany is a devastating look at one of the most miserable times in history. Hatred, torture and diabolical real-life evil are the main protagonists in this film that does not lend itself to romance or frivolity. It is a film that induces deep thought and a lingering feeling of despair and helplessness. Not good for any kind of date.

The Passion of the Christ

No religious movie or topic is a good idea on a date. First dates are for getting to know each other. They serves as a jumping board for all future dates. You begin to learn the ins and outs of each other’s personalities, likes and dislikes. First dates are not the time to lament the religious deities of the world and their strife. This movie goes above and beyond in its depiction of the struggles suffered by Jesus Christ. Rare does a dry eye escape a viewing. Not conducive to romantic eye gazing and intimate hand holding.

Philadelphia

This movie or any other about the devastation of the AIDS epidemic is not a good first date night choice. Movies like this one show you the intimate, quirky details of a person’s life, allows you to get to know and like these people and then spins a lurid and heartbreaking tale of how AIDS took hold and ravaged their bodies. It is depressing to say the least. Unless you want to leave your first date in a state of deep sadness and depression, skip this flick.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

While comedies are always a good idea this one is rife with sexual situations that are right in your face. If you know your date fairly well this may not be a problem but if she is someone you just met you’ll both be embarrassed. Talking about sex is good and its healthy for couples but not on the first date. It’s an intimate topic best broached between people that have a bit of a background. When your practically strangers, save for a few text and phone calls, this movie has the ability to make you want to crawl under your seat.

Moulin Rouge

There are a couple reasons this one is a bad idea. Firstly, there are a lot of half-naked women dancing and gyrating around throughout the duration of the film. Even if you aren’t the ogling type, you don’t want your date to feel uncomfortable. While there is a romantic story line and most chicks love this film, its liable to put a guy to sleep. Lots of singing and dancing is also tricky for a first date movie. It’s true that many women love musicals but it’s also true that many don’t.

Mean Girls

You will be tempted to go for this one because it’s a comedy but a bit dark and chicks seem to dig it. Don’t. It bores most guys to tears and we can’t have you falling asleep on a first date. She will also wonder just what kind of guy watches Mean Girls on a first date. It’s more of girls night movie where she can sit with her friends and dish about mean girls in their own lives and drink pink drinks with umbrellas and fruit.

There are many, many great movies for a first date. Your best bet is to choose one that marketed as a great date night movie. Remember to stay away from these movies and those along the same vein and you’ll be fine. Stay away from topics about religion, politics and blatant sex and you’ll have a great night.
